About VidSnag

Free · open source · made by one developer

VidSnag is a free, open-source video downloader for Windows, built by Zayd Elbassri on top of the open-source yt-dlp engine. It exists because every "free" online downloader had turned into a maze of pop-ups, fake buttons, and quality caps. VidSnag is the opposite: a small desktop app that runs on your own computer, with no ads, no account, and nothing to upload.

Who makes it

VidSnag is built and maintained by Zayd Elbassri, a developer who got tired of the sketchy state of "free" downloader websites. The whole project is public on GitHub at github.com/ElbassriZayd/vidsnag, so you can read every line of code, see exactly what it does, and build it yourself if you want to. There is no company behind it and no marketing team, just a tool made to do one job cleanly.

Why it is free, and how that stays true

VidSnag has no ads and no paid tier. It is funded by optional donations, not by advertising, which is the only way to keep a downloader honest. Ad-funded download sites have to fill the page with pop-unders and misleading buttons to make money. A donation-funded desktop app has no reason to do any of that.

How it works under the hood

The download engine is yt-dlp, the open-source project that supports over 1,000 sites. VidSnag wraps a clean Windows interface around it, bundles ffmpeg to merge high-resolution streams and extract MP3 audio, and runs everything locally. You can see the full list on the supported sites page.

Trust and safety

Because VidSnag is a downloadable program, trust matters. Three things let you verify it instead of taking anyone's word for it: the source code is open on GitHub, every release ships with a published SHA-256 checksum, and the build has a clean VirusTotal scan. If Windows shows a "not commonly downloaded" message, that is a reputation notice for any new unsigned app, not a virus warning. Our guide on safe downloading explains the details.
